Louisiana Purchase

On December 18th, 1803 the Cabildo on Jakson Square was the site for the grand finale of the largest real estate deal ever made (Transfer). Nearly 830,000 sq. miles for $15,000,000, about 4 cents per acre. Napoleon, in need of money to wage war on England, offered to sell the Louisiana Territory (just returned to France from Spain) to the United States. President Jefferson had inquired about purchasing New Orleans to secure the right of navigation on the river, instead was offered the opportunity to double the size of the country.
