On December 18th, 1803 the Cabildo on Jackson square was the site for the grand finale (the transfer) of the largest land transaction ever made, nearly 830,000 square miles for $15,000,000, about 4 cents an acre. Napoleon, in need of money to wage war on England, offered to sell the Louisiana Territory (just returned to France from Spain) to the United States. President Jefferson had inquired about purchasing New Orleans to secure the right of navigation on the river, but was instead offered the opportunity to double the size of the country.
